The historical tradition of Thasos
Religion
Thassos is an island with a great religious tradition. It has a plethora of churches and monasteries that are important not only from a historical point of view but also because of the relics they are home to. One of the many sides of Thassos that can fascinate with the wealth of history and tradition!
ONE OF THE ISLAND’S LARGEST MONASTERIES
Monastery of Archangel Michael
This nunnery belongs to Mount Athos and was founded in the 13th century. It is located between the villages of Aliki and Astrida and is one of the largest monasteries of Thassos. It is built on the cliff’s edge and offers a magical spectacle, both for those who see it from afar and those who gaze at the sea from its windows. It has a rich showcase, and a piece of the Holy Nails is kept, part of those used for Christ’s crucifixion.
THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN
Church of the Virgin
It is located in the village of Panagia and is one of the island’s most impressive buildings. It is its largest church, as its height reaches 18 meters! It is estimated that it was built around 1831 and houses icons from the 14th and 17th centuries. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. On the 15th of August, a number of events in its courtyard are part of Christianity’s great celebration, while the traditional “koulbani” (a Christianized animal sacrifice) is distributed to the congregation after the Mass.
UNIQUE IN SYLE,AESTHETICS AND CULTURAL VALUE
Agia Paraskevi
Agia Paraskevi is one of Theologos’ churches – and quite ordinary at first sight. Nevertheless, it is said that the icon of the Virgin Mary that adorns the temple is the work of the Evangelist Luke himself! This is an image made of wax and mastic, unique in style, aesthetics, and cultural value!
